Dr. J.S. Hurley currently serves as Chief Technology Officer and Senior Data Manager at NIU, where he is also Full Professor, in the Artificial Intelligence, Cyber, Influence, and Data Science (ACIDS) Department.
His interdisciplinary research centers on leveraging data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) technologies to tackle complex challenges across public and private domains — from mitigating misinformation and disinformation to engineering advanced material configurations for next-generation devices.
Dr. Hurley is an active member of the NVIDIA Development Group and serves on the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) User Council. He has contributed to strategic academic initiatives and national research dialogues, including as a Program Committee Member for the IEEE Security and Privacy Workshop on Assured Autonomous Systems.
A recent joint publication, “Old Birds, New Tricks: Building Convolutional Neural Networks from Declassified Satellite Reconnaissance Imagery”, appeared in the Journal of DoD Research & Engineering in 2024, and he is the Co-Author of Book “Cyber Security-Policy and Technology”, Springer Nature Book in Computational Methods in Applied Sciences Series scheduled for print and release, September 2025.
